The Department of State is committed to expanding the availability of service options during nontraditional business hours. For customers' convenience, we now offer many services via the Internet, such as vehicle and watercraft registration renewals. Another service alternative for doing business is by mail.

Driving record

When you schedule an office visit, you will be able to select a time and day convenient for you.

We recommend scheduling a visit, so you can be served on time and be back on your way in about 20 minutes. When you schedule a visit, the system will walk you through everything you need to bring with you for your transaction, helping you to avoid having to make a return visit.

Visits may be scheduled up to six months in advance. To schedule your visit, visit Online Services or call 888-SOS-MICH (888-767-6424).

If you’re unable to schedule a visit, you can stop by an office and staff will serve you if there is availability, invite you to wait or return for the next opening the same day, or assist you in scheduling a visit convenient for you, often for the next day.

Offices are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern Time (8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Central Time) on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, and from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Eastern Time (10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Central Time) on Wednesday. Some offices may close for lunch or may only be open on certain weekdays. All offices are closed on state holidays. On the first Thursday of each month, offices don't open until 10 a.m. Eastern Time (9 a.m. Central Time).

The local branch numbers were replaced with a single toll free number: 1-888-SOS-MICH (888-767-6424). Staffed Monday through Friday 8:30 A.M. to 5:00 P.M.

It is easy to remember and has many great features including:

• Phone call routing to service representatives who have the expertise best suited to addressing customers' specific issues.
• A program that lets service representatives spend time directly assisting callers rather than searching for customer data. It interprets verbal information and retrieves the caller's file, including call histories. (At the beginning of an operator assisted call, customers are asked after pressing zero to provide their driver's license or personal identification card number, which lets the system identify a caller and retrieve information about previous calls.
• The ability to assign customers a service number that can be used if a customer must call back.
• Self-service menu options for assistance with frequently asked questions such as branch office hours and locations. This is especially useful to callers after normal business hours.

Phone calls that formerly went to the busiest branch offices are now answered by the call center, which lets branch employees focus on customers at the counter.

Secretary of State offices will accept:

• Cash
• Check or money order payable to “State of Michigan”
• Credit or debit cards (American Express, Discover, MasterCard or Visa)
• Apple Pay, Google Pay or Samsung Pay

A processing fee will be charged when using credit or debit.

There are currently 131 branch offices located statewide, in addition to the Mobile Branch Office. (Updated August 2022)

The Secretary of State will forward your name and registration information to Selective Service, where it will be held on file until your 18th birthday. When you turn 18, you will be automatically registered with Selective Service and provided with a confirmation by mail.

Registering for the U.S. Selective Service System through the Secretary of State is optional. Declining this option to register does not affect your eligibility to obtain a driver's license. The intent of the law is to provide an additional method for Selective Service registration in addition to traditional methods.

The Military Selective Service Act of 1967 is a registration program used by the U.S. government to create and maintain a list of names of men from which to draw in case of a national emergency requiring rapid expansion of our armed forces. By registering all young men, the United States Selective Service System ensures that a future draft will be fair and equitable. Selective Service registration can also be done at high schools, colleges and universities, and via the Selective Service Web site at www.sss.gov. Effective Oct. 1, 2010, Michigan law (Public Act 642 of 2006) requires the Secretary of State to offer young men under the age of 26 the opportunity to register with Selective Service when applying for an original driver's license. As a general rule, if a holiday falls on a Saturday, the holiday is observed on Friday, and if it falls on a Sunday, the holiday is observed on Monday.
